Happy Easter!

Hope you all had an amazing Easter with family, friends, and good food! We did! My parents cooked an incredible brunch and then we had fondue for dessert. It was everything!! So glad the family got together for another holiday.

Coming up this week on apartment201: Jamal’s protein shake recipe and our dog’s favorite treats!

DIY: Essential Oils – Roller Ball Recipes

Hey friends!

I’m excited to share my roller ball recipes with you – we use these every day and I can’t get enough of them! They have brought me so much relief. After using these, I’m less stressed and my mood is instantly brighter. Below are my favorite four, these will get you started. You can always adjust the number of drops according to your preference. Let me know if you’d like to see more recipes – I have plenty!

Roller Bottles – Four 10ml Cobalt Blue Roller Bottles [My set included glass bottles as well; link here]

Labels – Plenty to choose from on Etsy; I got mine from this shop here

Essential Oils – I used Plant Guru (find them on Amazon) and Young Living!

Carrier Oil – I use Fractionated Coconut Oil; take a look at all of the benefits listed in the description here

I recommend putting your labels on the bottle first. Then take your roller bottle and remove the cap & ball. It should pop off easily. Slowly drop your essential oils in the bottle and fill the remainder with the carrier oil. Pop the ball & cap back on, give it a little shake and you’re finished! It’s SO easy to make these! Enjoy 🙂

Sleep – bottoms of feet & back of neck

Breathe – collar bones

Headache – back of neck & temples

Anxiety – wrists

If You Give Your Dog A Bath…

Chances are you’ll end up cursing. And sweating. And cursing again.

If you give your dog a bath, chances are he or she will attempt all possible routes of escape. Multiple times. My advice: shut the bathroom door.

If you give your dog a bath, you’ll save a ton of money by skipping the Groomers. So just hold on to that when your fur baby tries to jump the tub for the 18th time.

If you give your dog a bath, prepare for the inevitable Shake Off. Meaning: get a towel over that dog pronto!

Lastly, if you give your dog a bath, chances are he or she will give you that final look of utter betrayal. Tip: Bones and treats go a long way.

Top 5 on my Sephora Wish List

I love Sephora. Everything in there speaks to me on a personal level. If you have their Beauty Insider account then you’re familiar with the Loves List. I use this as a wish list and mine has grown to 10 pages long, no joke! There are just so many things to try and fall in love with! Here are my Top 5!

1. STILA Magnificent Metals Glitter & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow $24

These are soooo pretty. I want every single shade, but Kitten Karma really stands out to me. The champagne-copper shine looks stunning!

2. ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS Nicole Guerriero Glow Kit $40

Y’all. I need this. I mean, look at it! It’s gorgeous! Six highlighters for only forty bucks?! This would be really great to take on travel, too.

3. FARSÁLI Unicorn Essence $54

I’ve been eyeing this for like, ever. If unicorns are involved, just add it to my cart – I don’t need to know what it is. When I saw that Sephora picked it up, I practically fainted. It’s a shimmery pink serum that can be used as a primer before makeup application. Bonus: It helps protect against free radical damage! Extra bonus: The packaging is super cute!

4. HOURGLASS Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick $46

Confession: I’ve been using the same foundation (Revlon Color Stay) for about 9 years, which is crazy. It’s inexpensive and gets the job done so it’s hard for me to stray! But this foundation stick is really appealing to me. The application process alone looks infinitely easier (less messy, too) and the fact that they have a few fair shades to choose from is awesome! You know, for those of us who range from Snow White to porcelain to ivory…

5. ORIGINS Make A Difference™ Rejuvenating Hand Treatment $23

Origins has awesome skin care. I’ve been looking for a super-hydrating hand cream and this one has really good reviews online. Because I wash my hands a lot, they always seem to be dry. I’ve yet to find a holy grail hand cream but this one might make the list!

That’s all for now! Let me know what’s on your list 🙂

Movie Review: Passengers (2016)

Movie Review: Passengers (2016)

Rating: PG-13 // Length: 1 h 56min

Directed by Morten Tyldum and written by Jon Spaihts. Stars Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt, Michael Sheen, and Laurence Fishburne.

*This review will be simple and to the point, no fancy critiques. I watched it by myself, so this is just a solo mission – Jamal has not seen it yet! [Jamal, if you’re reading this – WATCH IT ALREADY]

Okay, so we’re introduced to the starship, Avalon, right off the bat. It’s massive and glorious and traveling to a planet called ‘Homestead II’, which literally takes 120 years to get to. [Just like my commute to work]. There are thousands of people on board in hibernation pods, waiting to be woken up on arrival day. We see an asteroid hit the Avalon, which really messes sh*t up. This happens only 30 years into the journey and causes a pod to malfunction. Enter Chris Pratt’s character, Jim Preston. He wakes up 90 years too early. [Nobody else is awake]. After failed attempts at fixing his pod and breaking into the command room to seek help, Jim settles into isolation. He does have the company of an android/bartender [Michael Sheen] but, it’s not enough. At one point he considers suicide. He eventually comes across the pod of Aurora Lane [Jennifer Lawrence], a writer with a sense of humor. Jim, desperate for companionship, wakes Aurora himself. He feigns ignorance and leads her to believe it was another pod malfunction. Aurora and Jim become lovers, enjoying the luxuries of the massive starship all to themselves.

Jim’s secret is kept for a year. Arthur [the android] ruins everything and spills the beans about Jim awakening Aurora. Aurora freaks out and attacks Jim, claiming he stole her life. *Sad face* Jim is back to his isolation, but not for long. Another pod malfunctions, which brings in a Chief Deck Officer, Gus [Laurence Fishburne]. They’re finally able to access the command room and discover the starship is having a system failure. At this point, lots of weird things start happening – gravity loss, fritzy cereal-dispenser, and troubled vacuums. The three of them try to repair as much as they can, but Gus is dying so they have limited time. Eventually Gus gives his access badge to Jim and Aurora so they can continue repairs after he’s gone. They successfully repair the ship; however, Jim almost dies doing so. Aurora ends up saving his life [because she’s madly in love with him] and they reconcile. Later on, Jim figures out that the medical treatment pod onboard can also be used as a hibernation pod. The catch: there’s only room for one – Aurora. Don’t worry – she doesn’t use it. *Happy tears* Jim & Aurora make a life together and leave behind a book of their time spent on the Avalon. 88 years later, everyone else wakes up – safe and sound.

My thoughts:

This movie was awesome! I am really not a fan of space odysseys but this one was actually really cool. Lots of intense action and adventure, combined with unique character and plot development, made for a perfect sci-for film. I loved Jim & Aurora’s chemistry and their resilience. You really become attached to them thru their journey and struggle. I do wish they had shown us glimpses of their later life onboard, though. Besides the romance, my favorite part was the actual ship. I loved the design: sleek, hi-tech, modern, and clean. Rent or buy the HD version of this, it’s worth it! The picture is gorgeous. 5 out of 5 STARS!

Let me know if you’ve seen it and what you thought!

Essential Oils

For the past few months, we’ve been getting into Essential Oils and we’ve been loving them! We use them every single day, aromatically and topically. We’ve tried a few brands: Aura Cacia, Plant Guru, and Young Living. My personal favorite is Young Living! They are the best quality. YL is a bit pricey though, so we typically order from Plant Guru (you can find them on Amazon, they have awesome sets!). There are so many oils to talk about so for now, I’ll stick to the basics. The Essential Oils below have many uses/benefits, I listed just a few:

Lavender – calming, stress reducer, promotes restful sleep, relieves tension

Peppermint – cooling, pain reliever, respiratory & digestion aid

Eucalyptus – respiratory relief, antibacterial, regulates blood sugar

Lemon – uplifting, detoxifying, cleansing and skin support

Sweet Orange – immunity booster, mood enhancer, anti-inflammatory

Rosemary – fights fatigue, promotes hair health, anti-aging benefits

Tea Tree – supports healthy skin, cleansing, anti-inflammatory

Ways we use essential oils: diffuse one or two oils at a time; we look up different diffuser recipes on Pinterest and tweak to our tastes. We combine our essential oils with a carrier oil, like coconut oil, to create roller balls to treat different issues. We also use them in spray bottles!

I’ll make a post soon on our favorite roller ball recipes and spray bottle DIYs!
